The Miyota cal.9015

The Miyota cal.9015 is an automatic movement that has been very popular with many watch companies because of its great attributes.  It has the following technical specifications:

  • 28,800 vibrations per hour - this is considered as high-beat which results in a very smooth, gliding seconds hand
  • 24 jewels - the number of synthetic rubies used inside the movement.  It has low friction properties which helps slow down wear and tear
  • 4.10mm height - because of this dimension, watch construction can be made slimmer which is a factor that makes for an attractive dress watch
  • 42 hours running time
  • -10~30 seconds gain per day

In addition to being automatic, it can also be wound by hand.  Other features include shock absorption and hacking seconds, a useful function that lets you synchronize time that stops the seconds hand when the crown is pulled all the way.

It's affordability and availability is also a huge factor in its proliferation in the watch industry, and partly due to the fact that the Swiss movement manufacturer named ETA SA Manufacture Horlogère Suisse or ETA has been limiting the accessibility of their model, the ETA 2824, exclusively to those under the Swatch group (of which Omega, Rado, Tissot, Hamilton, and many others are in).

However, it is a fairly undecorated movement so it may require a bit of refining for watch models that have a display caseback.
